Drywall Measuring Guide

Estimate drywall sheet count from wall area, ceiling area, sheet size, and waste.

Find wall area

Room wall area equals 2 x (length + width) x wall height. Add each room or wall section.

Add ceilings when needed

Ceiling area equals length x width. Include it when the ceiling will be covered with drywall.

Divide by sheet size

A 4x8 sheet covers 32 square feet. Larger sheets reduce seams but can be harder to handle.

Add waste

Add 10-15% for cuts, broken corners, openings, and layout constraints.

FAQ

Do I subtract doors and windows?

For rough estimates, many DIYers do not subtract small openings because waste offsets them.

Which sheet size should I use?

4x8 sheets are easier to handle. Larger sheets can reduce seams in big rooms.

Does this include joint compound?

No. Sheet count is only the main panel estimate.
