Estimate mulch cubic yards from bed length, width, depth, and waste.
Measure bed area
For rectangular beds, multiply length by width. For curved beds, divide the space into rough rectangles and add them together.
Choose depth
A 2-3 inch layer is common. Avoid piling mulch directly against trunks or siding.
Convert volume
Volume equals area times depth. Convert inches to feet, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards.
Bag or bulk
Bulk mulch is sold by cubic yard. Bagged mulch is often sold in 2 cubic foot bags.

How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is common for existing beds. New beds may need more.
Should old mulch be removed?
Remove excess old mulch if the bed is already too deep or matted.
How many bags are in one cubic yard?
